Abstract
This study aims to develop an assessment of Social Values of Older Adults(SVOA) and to identify the psychometric properties of the SVOA. The researchers provided 60 items by conceptualization and operationalization, and selected 46 items by three pre-tests and one review of professionals. A total of 815 participants were consisted of adolescences(aged 14 to 19)(n=200, 24.5%), young adults(aged 20¢¦29)(n=221, 27.1%), middle adults(aged 30¢¦59)(n=187, 22.9%), and older adults(over 60)(n=207, 27.1%). The sample was randomly divided into two group to test reliability and validity of the newly developed scale. The 36-item scale with six factors were suggested, based on the internal reliability and exploratory factor analysis(EFA) on SVOA with the first group(n=401). In addition, the internal reliability and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) using the other group(n=399) were conducted with the revised 36-item scale with six factors, which were suggested in the previous research with the first group. Finally, the 30-item scale with 6 factors were developed to evaluate social values of older adults in South Korea(SVOA). The results showed that the overall reliability of the SVOA scale was .918, with .895 for family factor, .885 for friend factor, .860 for neighbor factor, .860 for inter-generational commitment factor, .858 for community factor, and .770 for nation factor. Although the number of the items in the final scale decreased from 46 to 30, the internal consistency of the SVOA was relatively high. The results showed that the final version of the 30-item SVOA with six dimensions had a good model fit(x2=1008.14, RMSEA=.064, SRMR= .056, NNFI=.89, IFI=.90, CFI=.90). In conclusion, the SVOA can be used as a scale for social work researchers and practitioners to address social values of older adults or to evaluate effectiveness of social work program for older adults.
